Closing Sabattus Primary School Information
On January 8, 2025, the Board unanimously voted to close Sabattus Primary School, in accordance with state law (20-A M.R.S.A 4102(3)). This decision reflects careful consideration of enrollment trends, budget challenges, and the need for programming consolidation.
With the closure, RSU #4 will serve Kindergarten and first-grade students at Libby-Tozier School and Prekindergarten, second, third, and fourth-grade students at Carrie Ricker School. This change will streamline resources and improve educational programming. Importantly, there will be no reduction in teaching staff, educational technicians, or specialists, ensuring continued support for our students. We also anticipate improved bus travel times.
The closure of Sabattus Primary School will result in annual operational savings that will contribute to alleviating our budget challenges. We are actively developing a plan to make facility improvements for Libby-Tozier School, which will include funding options.
Thank you for your continued support as we navigate this important decision together.
A referendum vote will occur on April 8, 2025, allowing residents of all three towns to authorize the closure of Sabattus Primary School. All communities must vote against the closure for the school to remain open; a single affirmative vote will lead to its closure.
